Leon POLK SMITH - DIAGONAL PASSAGE 120 - EXACTA FROM CONSTRUCTIVISM TO SYSTEMATIC ART 1918-1985

The square, even if complete and evident in only two figures of the composition (one blue, the other red) is the basic element of this work enclosed in a circle.
The largest square is the one defined by a black perimeter, inscribed in the circle; but optically it can be transformed into two overlapping squares by reason of the two diagonal interruptions which serve to oppose to this closed and polyvalent form with two open squares likewise defined by the black perimeter.
The mental mechanism of vision tends to complete them alternatively and dynamically, bringing into view a complex image with an extremely simple basis. This duality, explicit or implicit, is the essential characteristic of the work.
