Roy Lichtenstein – Figures in Landscape
This exhibition poster features the work, Figures in Landscape (1977), by American artist, Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997). It was printed in connection with Louisiana's exhibition with the American pop artist. Lichtenstein has been exhibited at Louisiana on several occasions, and Figures in Landscape is in the museum's collection.
Lichtenstein is particularly known for his paintings based on American cartoons from the 1940s and 1950s. Figures in Landscape clearly reflects Roy Lichtenstein's iconic style, and was painted after the artist had visited Louisiana in the 1970s. This is far from a landscape picture in the traditional sense. A woman in profile, who is presumably the artist's own wife, is included as a motif together with a column and a section with a tie knot.
Along with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and James Rosenquist, Roy Lichtenstein is one of the most significant figures within the Pop Art movement. His imagery is inspired by the schematics and surfaces of the printed matter with contours and dots - as also reproduced on the poster.
