The silk-screen print Jeux is based on a painting done in 1951, a free composition somewhat influenced by cubism. In the first version I used collage and developed the composition by trial and error; the final version is "hard edged" and enamel paint was used. The title is that of Debussy's ballet score, music I had been playing while I worked.
Most of my works have been relief constructions and even those in low relief, virtually two-dimensional compositions, have never had a uniform surface. I have produced entirely two-dimensional works using forms of industrial technique. Even where paint was used, they have been quite unpainterly.
