Albrecht DURER - Deposition of Christ (The Large Passion), c. 1496-97

Strauss states of this piece, “The many magnificent details, and the somewhat jumbled composition of this “Deposition” compound the difficulty in discerning that actually three men are about to place Christ’s body into the tomb. The stance of the man lifting the Savior’s head is unclear. Christ’s legs seem to be too long, whereas the expression of his face is almost serene…Christ’s wound seems to be on the wrong side of his chest, but this may be due to the influence of the cult of the Sacred Heart, showing the wound on the left side in greater proximity to the Saviour’s heart. The Virgin, in a dominant position, appears paralyzed with grief as she stares ahead sadly not following the action of the scene.” (Strauss, p. 150).

Created in c. 1496-7 This work is monogrammed by Albrecht Dürer (Nuremburg, 1471- Nuremburg, 1528) in the woodblock 'AD' in the lower center. A lifetime impression, this work is from the Latin edition of 1511, with Latin text on verso.
