Marc CHAGALL - Signed & Dedicated - Dessins et aquarelles pour Le Ballet

Marc Chagall (1887–1985)
Dessins et aquarelles pour “Le Ballet”
Text by Jacques Lassaigne
Paris: XXe Siècle (San Lazzaro), 1969
Large quarto volume (approx. 35 × 26 cm), comprising 155 pages, complete with numerous color and black illustrations throughout, including a color lithograph by Chagall printed by Mourlot Frères as frontispiece (Mourlot 581; Cramer 78).
Publisher’s original binding with illustrated dust jacket and slipcase. Copy preserved in very good condition, with only minimal signs of wear to the dust jacket; interior clean and well preserved.
This work belongs to the important series of monographic publications issued by XXe Siècle, under the direction of San Lazzaro, documenting Chagall’s engagement with stage design and ballet. The volume reproduces a rich corpus of drawings and watercolors connected to theatrical and choreographic projects, reflecting the artist’s poetic visual language and his longstanding dialogue with performance arts.
Edition:
One of approximately 10,000 unnumbered copies, issued for wide distribution.
Particular copy:
This example is significantly distinguished by a handwritten dedication signed by Marc Chagall and dated 1975 on the title page.
The inscription reads:
“Pour Mr Thomas Bangert” (handwritten),
followed by Chagall’s signature and date.
Bibliography:
Cramer, Marc Chagall: Catalogue raisonné des livres illustrés, no. 78
Mourlot, Chagall Lithographe, no. 581
Remarks:
While the edition itself is not limited, copies bearing original autograph inscriptions by Chagall are scarce, particularly those dated and clearly addressed. Such examples occupy a distinct position on the market, bridging standard monographic publications and personalized artist-associated material.
