Andy Warhol created Old Fashioned Vegetable for his 1969 portfolio Campbell’s Soup II. Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup cans are some his most iconic works and are widely recognized in American popular culture. Drawing inspiration from every day life, Warhol transformed this American pantry staple into high art, bridging the gap between the classes. Old Fashioned Vegetable is exemplary of the pop artist’s technique of appropriating simple imagery and printing it in bold colors that stand out against the solid background. Andy Warhol first presented his Campbell’s Soup cans in 1962 at an exhibition at the Los Angeles Ferus Gallery, garnering him overnight fame. He repeatedly returned the still life subject, notably in 1968 with his Campbell’s Soup I portfolio and again in 1969 with Campbell’s Soup II, which includes Old Fashioned Vegetable.
