Andy WARHOL - Albert Einstein (FS II.229)

Albert Einstein 229 by Andy Warhol was created in 1980 and became a part of his Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century series. This series contains a few of the most influential Jewish people that lived in the 20th century. The German-born theoretical physicist is known to be one of the greatest thinkers of all time––not just the 20th century. He broke ground in the the field of physics with his general theory of relativity, which provided more insight on gravitation, along with implications of the possibility of black holes. Albert Einstein is arguably the most recognized and celebrated physicists to ever exist.

Albert Einstein 229 as Part of Andy Warhol’s Larger Body of Work
Warhol became fascinated with a group of influential Jewish figures – a pantheon of great thinkers, politicians, performers, musicians and writers, including renowned mathematician and physicist Albert Einstein. In Warhol’s Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century portfolio, Albert Einstein’s famous portrait is featured alongside others such as Sarah Bernhardt, Louis Brandeis, Martin Buber, Sigmund Freud, George Gershwin, Franz Kafka, the Marx Brothers, Golda Meir, and Gertrude Stein. The collective achievements of these famous Jews changed the course of the twentieth century and may be said to have influenced every aspect of human experience.
