Dagobert PECHE - Daphne

Multicolour print in dark green, light green, pink, red, ochre, light grey and black on cardboard-like paper, 49 x 43.8 cm. Stamped "Daphne" and "13019" verso. The left margin of the sheet with the original binding holes. Wallpaper sample with leafy tendrils and floral umbels after a design by Dagobert Peche, produced by Flammersheim & Steinmann for the Wiener Werkstätte, Cologne 1922. The draft is in the MAK Vienna under the inventory number KI 12717-4 (there titled "Daphnis"). Reference: Metropolitan Museum New York No. 23.236(124).

The MET in New York states "Machine roll-printed" as the printing technique, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD) somewhat more precisely "polychrome machine glue printing" (for another wallpaper sample by Flammersheim & Steinmann). The fact is that Dagobert Peche felt compelled to travel to Cologne in person to supervise the apparently complicated realisation of his drafts. The result is still astonishing today, as the surfaces of the samples have the appearance of impasto gouache painting (Galerie Hochdruck also offers a second sample with a different colour scheme).
