A wonderful portrait of an African by Payrau, executed very early in his career, depicting the subject realistically and casting him in a noble light. Such an image from 1890 is quite unusual. Payrau went on to specialize in flattering portraits of aristocratic Frenchwomen (which was doubtless very profitable.)
AN OUTSTANDING, AND POSSIBLY UNIQUE, IMPRESSION ON IMPERIAL JAPANESE PAPER.
With a presentation inscription from Payrau to Alfred Porcabeuf, the printer. Signed by Payrau.
In excellent condition.
OF THE GREATEST RARITY: WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO LOCATE ANOTHER IMPRESSION OF THIS PRINT.
