Long before Saint-Pol-Roux's name became a Surrealist banner, it already lived in Masson's studio in a discreet and precious form: a small ink drawing dated 1925, kept and displayed in his personal library. This seemingly anecdotal detail reveals a longer-lasting loyalty than the more spectacular episode of the Banquet. In 1961, taking up the name for a print, Masson was not responding to an occasional commission: he was extending a silent dialogue, sustained for nearly forty years, with a poet he held in his own esteem, independently of the Surrealist group. The work is thus less a collective commemoration than a long-matured private homage.
