Utagawa KUNIYOSHI - Soshin (Morokoshi nijūshi kō)

Colour woodcut on Japan paper, 2,6 x 18,6 cm. 1848. Signed Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi with Kiri seal. From the series "Morokoshi nijūshi kō" (24 forms of filial piety in China). The texts in the upper cartouche are by Ryūkatei Tanekazu (1807-1858).

The picture shows Soshin (Tseng Ts'an) descending from the tree. He had suddenly felt that something was wrong with his mother (she had cut her finger) and is now about to rush to her. After the early death of his father, who was a disciple of Confucius and a great scholar, Soshin took care of his mother.
