Utagawa KUNISADA - Ichimei hakkenden inu no sôshi (The eight dog chronicles)

Volume 8 of 56 (?) volumes of the novel by Ryûtei Senka (1804-1868) after Kyokutei Bakin. Publisher: Kôeidô, Tokyo c.1847/1848. Censor's seal: Nanushi. 1 part in 2 volumes with continuous pagination. Each book 17,5 x 11,7 cm. Together 20 pp. Each block book with b/w woodcuts over two facing pages and Japanese cord binding (this renewed). The recto of both covers with a multi-colour woodcut (diptych) by Utagawa Kunisada (signed "Ichiyōsai Toyokuni ga" in Toshidama cartouche).
With a dog pattern on the verso as an allusion to the content of the novel, which is a shorter version of Kyokutei Bakin's original 106-volume novel "Nansō Satomi Hakkenden", the longest novel in Japanese literary history. It is commonly translated as the Eight Dog Chronicles or the Tale of the Eight Dogs (also: "The Book of the Eight Dog Heroes" or "Tale of Eight Dog Warriors").
