Otakar KUBÍN - Untitled (Cubist male figure)

1914. Title woodcut for the magazine: Der Sturm. Halbmonatsschrift für Kultur und die Künste (Bi-monthly magazine for culture and the arts). Publisher and editor Herwarth Walden. 5th volume, no. 3 (first May issue 1914). 41.7 x 31.2 cm, pp. 17-24. With an original title woodcut by Otakar Kubín (= Othon Coubine), 16.8 x 20.3 cm. With another full-page original woodcut (‘Project for a Cemetery near Prague 1912’) by Vlastislav Hofman inside the magazine. Reference: Söhn HDO 54103
The legendary magazine ‘Der Sturm’, which was published by Herwarth Walden in Berlin between 1910 and 1933 and represents a unique documentation of many of the flourishing art movements of the time (especially Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism and Constructivism), was folded horizontally once for dispatch. This means that a crease runs through many of the original prints on the title pages. In our case, the magazine was also sent unpackaged, as evidenced by the double postmark with place and date on the title page.
