Fritz FUHRKEN - Mann und Weib (Man and Woman)

Fritz Fuhrken: Mann und Weib (Man and Woman), 1922. Woodcut on Japan paper, ca. 23.9 x 11 cm (block), ca. 40 x 17.7 cm (sheet). Titled 'Mann & Weib' in pencil by the artist, marked 'Orig. Holzschnitt' (orig. woodcut), signed and dated. Numbered 4/25 by a third hand. Provenance: Estate of Carry Hauser (with the stamp on the right lower margin verso)

Both Fritz Fuhrken and Carry Hauser (from whose estate this sheet comes) were members of the expressionist artists' group “Der Fels”. The group existed from around 1920 to 1927 and goes back to the meeting of Franz Bronstert, Fritz Fuhrken and Georg Philipp Wörlen in the Ripon prisoner-of-war camp in Yorkshire, England. They were later joined by Reinhard Hilker and the Austrian painter and printmaker Carry Hauser. The artists not only exhibited together in Germany and Austria, but also published broadsheets and artists' books along with eight portfolios with lithographs and woodcuts. In addition, they also produced numerous individual prints such as this one.
