About the Pochoir Technique

Pochoir (the French word for stencil) is a highly refined technique for hand-coloring limited edition prints. Popular in Europe from the late 19th century through the Art Deco era in Paris, it rejuvenated the application of rich watercolor to paper. Because it is extremely labor-intensive and expensive, Pochoir results in a luminous texture that is often indistinguishable from an artist's original hand-painted work. Master artists who embraced this method include Salvador Dalí, Sonia Delaunay, Raoul Dufy, and Joan Miró.
