Marc CHAGALL - La mort et le bûcheron (Death and the Woodcutter, from the fables of La Fontaine)

THE UNIQUE BON A TIRER OF ONE OF CHAGALL'S MOST IMAGINATIVE AND INTERESTING ETCHINGS.

In 1927 Ambroise Vollard commissioned a series of etchings from Chagall to illustrate La Fontaine's fables. The etchings were finally published (unsigned) in a livre d'artiste in 1952 by Tériade.

When Chagall finished working on a plate, and had it exactly as he wanted it, he would print a proof and annotate it "Bon" or "Bon à tirer", and sign it. The printer would use this proof as a model for the entire edition.

THIS IS THE BON A TIRER (or "BAT") FOR "LA MORT ET LE BUCHERON" ("Death and the Woodcutter"), ONE OF LA FONTAINE'S MOST BELOVED FABLES AND ONE OF CHAGALL'S MOST INDELIBLE IMAGES.

Printed on fine wove paper.

In excellent condition.

UNIQUE AND IMPORTANT.
