Georges BRAQUE - Varengeville,1955

Composed in a mesmerizing horizontal design, muted tones and cool greys denote this panoramic ocean view with peace and tranquility. Dense and expansive, the viewer finds themselves entranced by Braque’s depiction of this endless ocean encompassed by velvety sands. Characteristic of the artist’s oeuvre, this work is one of many maritime scenes inspired by his retreats to the Normandy Coast. Varengeville, a small village located on the coast of the English Channel, served as Braque’s final residence as well as a frequent holiday destination for other artists including Miró, Picasso, and notably Monet, who too sought inspiration from the seascape vistas.

Created c. 1955, this color etching and aquaintint is hand-signed by Georges Braque (Argenteuil, Val d’Oise, 1882 – Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin. Published by Maeght, Paris and printed by Crommelynck, Paris, this work is numbered 164/300 in pencil in the lower left margin.
