Georges BRAQUE - Profil (Profile) from Lettera amorosa

Braque is known to have spent years working on this project, the illustrations for Lettera Amorosa by René Char. This exquisite work from the book utilizes sweeps of color to create a simple, elegant composition. Highlighting a flock of birds, Braque overlaps them creating a striking and contemplative scene. Given that the context of this book is of love letters, we can almost surmise that the birds denote joy and happiness or the freedom in pursuing a love of your own choosing; a memorizing work that certainly leaves the viewer guessing.

Created in 1963, this lithograph in seven colors is hand-signed by Georges Braque (Argentueil, Val-d'Oise, 1882 - Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right. Numbered from the edition of 75, this work is one of 29 color lithographs created for the book Lettera Amorosa by René Char. Published by Edwin Engelberts, Geneva, and printed by Mourlot, Paris.
