Georges BRAQUE - Fleur d'automne (Autumn Flower)

Aptly entitled Fleur d'automne (Autumn Flower), this work depicts a blossoming flower in earthy, brown hues. Reminiscent of a sunflower, this large, blooming bud has a large, circular center filled with seeds, bringing to mind thoughts of an abundant harvest. Large leaves of the same hue surround the flower, blending in with its petals and causing some discrepancy in distinguishing the flower's form from those of its leaves. The entire piece radiates with a sense of bounty and joy. We can almost imagine breathing in the crisp, autumn air, so thoroughly does Braque convey the feel of this wonderful season.

Created in c. 1950, this original color lithograph is numbered 59/75 in pencil at the lower left and signed in pencil by Georges Braque (Argenteuil, Val-d'Oise, 1882 - Paris, 1963) at the lower right.
