Edmund BLAMPIED - The tumble

Edmund Blampied (1886-1966), A Tumble, 1921, drypoint, signed in pencil lower margin. [Also signed BLAMPIED in plate, at foot of plate toward the left] References: Dodgson 61, Allhusen (Print Collector's Quarterly) 38. Plate destroyed March 1921. On cream wove Whitman 1919 England paper, with the watermark. From the edition of 100 impressions. In very good condition, with margins (slight stain along top margin edge), 7 3/4 x 11 3/4, the sheet 10 x 15 1/4, archival mounting.

A fine impression of this study in movement - the dramatic moment when a rider tumbles from a horse. The drypoint work yields a strong burr which accentuates the sense of movement.

Blampied was famed among British etchers for his ability to portray horses in motion, and this impression is a superb example of his work. He avoids the convention of filling up the space, and locates the action at the left, moving toward the top right; the space at the center includes only a few lines but they balance the whole.
