Music - Biography
1909 -
Zoran Music is born in Gorizia, Dalmatia in Slovenia.
1930 -
Music enters the Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts.
1935 -
The artist moves to Spain where he copies the works of Greco and Goya.
1943 -
Zoran Music takes his first trip to Venice.
1944 -
Zoran Music is stopped by the Gestapo. He is accused of collusion with the Trieste resistance and he is imprisoned for a few days. He is then sent to the Dachau concentration camp.
1945 -
The Americans liberate the Dachau camp and Music is freed. During his captivity, he created, at the risk to his life, approximately 100 drawings of the horrors that he witnessed.
1948 -
Music exhibits, for the first time at the Venice Biennial Exhibition. This same year he joins with Campigli and Tobey.
1952 -
Music moves to Paris and signs a contract with the France Gallery.
1955 -
Zoran Music engraves his first etchings at the Lacourière workshop in Paris.
1956 -
Music receives the Grand Prize for engraving at the Venice Biennial Exhibition.
1957 -
Beginning of the series of Dalmation landscapes including paintings and engravings.
1962 -
First catalogue raisonné of Music’s prints by Schmücking.
1970 -
Music begins to paint and to draw the “We Are Not the Last” series that deals with the tragic experiences that he encountered in Dachau
1971 -
Beginning of the period of vegetable motifs (paintings and engravings)
1972 -
Lassaigne organises a Music retrospective at the Paris Museum of Modern Art (First retrospective at the Museum for a living painter).
1976 -
Beginning of the rocky landscapes period.
1995 -
Zoran Music gradually loses his vision. The Grand Palais in Paris dedicates an exhibition in his honour.
2005 -
Zoran Music dies in Venice at the age of 96.
