Medium: Screenprint on wallpaper, 1989/90, Printed right: THE ESTATE AND FOUNDATION OF ANDY WARHOL. Printed left: ANDY WARHOL: A RETROSPECTIVE : THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART 1989/90
Note: Portraying a sketched version of Chairman Mao Zedong, this print by Andy Warhol explores representations of the iconic Chinese leader. By turning visual propaganda on its head, Warhol’s Mao is rendered with a humorous and playful quality, heightened by a large purple oval. The print was originally conceived for Warhol’s exhibition at the Musée Galliera, Paris, in 1974, and was reprinted by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, for a posthumous retrospective of the artist in 1989/90. This piece is a screenprint in colours on wallpaper, unsigned,
