Conveying a sense of three dimensionality, this pentagonal rug toys with the viewer's visual perception. This optical work consists of varied hues of brilliant royal and midnight blues that pop out at the viewer. This piece appears as if constantly shifting; at one glance, it appears as if a square cube rests in the center while at the next, it appears as if a square recess exists within the piece.
In one moment, a smaller pentagon in the center of the work seems to loom out towards the viewer while in the next instance this smaller pentagon appears to fall into itself. This intriguing work actively engages the viewer and creates the illusion of varied shapes and forms.
Created in 1983, this unique work is signed and dated with the hand-woven signature 'Vasarely 83' in black in the lower right.
