For Soulages, there is no hierarchy between painting, drawing and printmaking. Lithograph no. 8 illustrates his global approach to art, in which each technique is a way of exploring matter and light. The strength of the black gives it all its depth.
By layering black over red and yellow, the artist emphasises the materiality of the ink. The effect of contrast and transparency evokes an inner radiance, as if the light emanated from the colour itself.
