For Soulages, there is no hierarchy between painting, drawing and printmaking. Etching II illustrates his artistic approach, in which each technique is a way of exploring matter and light. The strength of the black gives it all its depth.
The artist emphasises the materiality of the ink by layering black over red. The effect of contrast and transparency evokes an inner radiance, as if the light emanated from the colour itself.
