Pablo PICASSO - Bacchanale

After Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1973)

Title Bacchanale
Medium: Offset lithograph in colours, 1973, on Arches watermarked paper, signed in the stone by the artist and by Phillipe de Rothschild. Around the image and text is an indented section made by a machine. The image by Picasso depicts a painting date 1959 in the Museum of Mouton Rothschild.
Note 1: Above the image is enscribed “En hommage a Picasso (1881 - 1973) indicating that this is a posthumous impression - the artist had just died in that year. Beneath the image there is a date, 1973, and details of the vintage wine which it promotes “Pauillac - Produce of France). Picasso had only recent died when his family discussed the possibility of Mouton Rothschild using one of his paintings for their label. A watercolour and goache on paper dated 22.12.1959 was chosen. This, doubtless, conveyed the imagery required for the project : dancing inebriated forms swirling together!
Note 2: To commemorate the Allied victory in 1945, Baron Phillipe de Rothschild had the idea of embellishing the Mouton Rothschild label with art. Each year a famous painter was asked to produce a design for a label and this custom lasted from 1945 until today. The label design was incorporated into a poster to advertise the wine and this is an example of one of these attractive and well made pieces - on quality thick paper. Amongst the more famous “labels” and posters were:
1955 : George Braque
195 6 : Salvador Dali
1967: Cesar
1970 : Marc Chagall
1972 : Serge Polliakoff

1998: Rufino Tamayo
2004 HRH The Prince of Wales
