Livre de peintre exubérant de couleur et de mouvement Cirque est considéré à juste titre comme l’un des plus réussis du XXe siècle.
Par sa conception, où le texte et l'illustration sont de la même main, il est à rapprocher du Jazz de Matisse.
Fernand Léger a très certainement puisé son inspiration dans les représentations du cirque Medrano auxquelles il assista assidûment en compagnie de Max Jacob et Apollinaire.
Celui-ci, exemplaire d'imprimeur sur Arches, non numéroté et non signé au colophon.
Exemplaire très bien conservé et (quasiment) sans reports ce qui n’est pas fréquent (Photos supplémentaires sur demande).

Loose as issued in publisher’s stiff pictorial wrappers designed by Léger, glassine overwrappers, chemise with printed spine label, and slipcase. A complete and well-preseved copy. Some very light offsettings.This one, printer's copy on Arches paper, unnumbered and unsigned on the colophon.
Copy very well preserved and (almost) without transfers which is not frequent (445 x 350 mm. overall) ( Additional photos on request).
'Cirque' is Léger's master graphic work, a compendium of 34 colour lithographs and 29 in black - almost half his print output. The text is Léger's own and his themes are the circus and the countryside; from these touchstones of his inspiration Léger extracts the principles of his art and life. There can be no doubt that Cirque stands as his testament.' (Saphire).
