This etching serves as the opening illustration for the enchanting tale of 'Rumpelstilzchen.' The fairytale narrates the story of a miller who boasts to the king that his daughter possesses the extraordinary ability to spin straw into pure gold. With the aid of a mysterious imp, the young woman accomplishes this extraordinary feat, albeit in exchange for her precious jewelry and, eventually, a pledge to surrender her first-born child. Capturing the essence of this tale's beginning, Hockney's artistic portrayal showcases cascading straw miraculously transforming into glimmering gold, cleverly juxtaposing elements to accentuate the luster of the precious metal.
This etching is part of a collection of 39 captivating etchings created by Hockney for his series titled 'Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm.' From the vast treasury of 220 tales by the Brothers Grimm, Hockney carefully selected six stories, cherished since his childhood. Among them are 'The Little Sea Hare,' 'Fundevogel,' 'Rapunzel,' 'The Boy who left Home to learn Fear,' 'Old Rinkrank,' and, of course, 'Rumpelstilzchen.' In explaining his attraction to these tales, Hockney reflected on their simple, direct, and straightforward narrative style, which fascinated him. Moreover, these tales encompass a diverse range of experiences, spanning from the magical to the moral, thereby adding to their timeless allure.
