Francisco GOYA - Andarse Po Las Ramas; Disparate Ridiculo, (plate 3 from Los Proverbios)

Created 1819-1824; printed 1864, the first published edition, before the plates were numbered; published by the Academia de Nobles Artes de San Fernando, state iii/iii; printed by Laurenciano Potenciano workshop; on antique-white wove; includes A. Maroni's collector's stamp (Lugt 150 B) in red ink, lower left margin. A crisp, rich impression in excellent condition.

From the portfolio, "Los Proverbios". The subject, also known as "Ridiculous Folly" depicts a coven of witches in a tree (one has a beard) and were used by Goya as representatives of social decadence.
This print is also known as "Extravagant Folly" and "To talke through one's hat"
Many of the proverbs can only be speculated about.
