Note: With the help of the ceramist Hans Spinner, Pierre Alechinsky created book-shaped sculptures, the larger ones in stoneware and the smaller ones in porcelain. Whether open or closed, they are decorated with a design, a simple line, a word or a play on words.

"To the forms presented to him by the ceramist – masses of chamotte clay or porcelain – shaped like books, grimoires, or bundles of papers, Alechinsky gives meaning and offers an interpretation, capturing with a single stroke – that of a fine brush – a suggestion born of the form, returning to that practice of automatic writing which lies at the very origin of his work. Black on white, revealing, Alechinsky’s brush traverses these essential pages, linking text and drawing, tracing them back to that common origin of Chinese writing which, for the painter, makes of drawing a narrative, of the image an aspect of the ideogram. This focus on writing, which was initially limited – at a time when this was not very common – to titling the paintings, before becoming an autonomous and regular production of texts, finds its paradoxical illustration here. As with the composition of a haiku, the space offered to the painter by Hans Spinner imposes a contraction of thought and gesture, reducing the miniature to a few brushstrokes and a touch of wit."
